Tips for success in your studies
Wider learning – how to add knowledge and success to your studies
Whether you are a first
year/level 4 student, or a continuing student (or anyone interested in design!), it is necessary to keep creative and add to your skill base - sketches, photos, small test projects that you set yourself – materials research,
measuring space, photography, collage, line drawing, model making – this can be experimental,
sketch development etc.
You will
also benefit from reading about design, architecture, spaces and related design
topics on a regular basis. You might watch a documentary on design or visit an exhibition and then
write a short review of it. This will make you think about issues and how you
relate to them and widen your general knowledge and understanding. Keep a blog - add your work, ideas, thoughts and news - share with others.
Many great exhibitions and public lecture series take place in the main museums and cultural institutions in London. The university also holds regular Design Talks.

Keep up to
date of current trends and what is shown in galleries and exhibition spaces in
London, locally and beyond, as a lot will be relevant. The more you see and think about
design, the better. Look also at materials – anything from timber, stone, glass, concrete…
sustainable materials and smart technologies. Interactivity in design – all
very exciting things to start learning about.

do ho suh: home within home
leeum samsung museum of art, seoul, south korea
open now until june 3rd, 2012
'home within home' is a solo representation of do ho suh's work showcasing the korean artist's newest sculptural pieces.
the special exhibition gallery of leeum samsung museum of art has been decorated with suh's thread-and-sheer-fabric-drawn
representations of his nomadic existence living in major urban centers such as seoul, new york and berlin.
in 'home within home', the artist investigates the idea of truly inhabiting a place, developing the concept of 'home' as skeletal representations
throughout the museum, actualizing this concept as both a boundary and passageway in the gallery space. each piece exists as an entirely
separate experience, influenced by the light and surrounding architecture; the orientation of the suspended works in comparison to one another
also reveals a greater complexity to the artist's examination of 'the home' through this assemblage of bright floating structures.
